Gearing up for Windsor Weekend.
Thinking about racing. My ultimate gasser is probably a 51 henry J. Had one, sold it, still sorry. A friend of mine talks Angias all the time. A couple of other friends have Willys. But I prefer Henry J s. 1951 Henry J I have owned more than 200 cars and not very many have not been GM. One summer when things were crazy busy I bought a Ford F150, a Mustang 5.0 litre and a Dart Sport.
There are a few non GM cars that catch my eye. When my sister was looking for a car way back, I took her to look at a 74 Barracuda. It was a 6 cylinder , automatic and would have made a cool car for her. She ended up with a 72 Olds Cutlass with 68000 original miles. Anyway, these Barracudas caught my eye. I could drive either one. 1972 1973 Barracuda. I grew up riding in Big Cars. Impalas, Wildcats, Le Sabres, Electras, Ninety Eights, Galaxies. I started driving in an Impala, later had a Bel Air. Most of the cars I have had as winter beaters have been full size as well. A 1984 Olds Ninety Eight is the last of the big ones. Built on the Cadillac chassis they ride great , haul more than a small truck and with the overdrive transmission, even get great gas mileage. Just remember they are 30 year old used cars and may try your patience .
1955 Chevy 2 door: colour is off a little but it looks like you just add the mailbox on the hood and it would be close to a 2 Lane Blacktop tribute car. Not Bullit or Bandit but still a good driving movie and if you are fond of 55 Chevies - one of them is the star.
Today's pick is a little different from my usual in that it has 4 doors. It is a hardtop and that makes it cool in my book. 59 Chevies are long and low, they ride great, are easy to work on and this one would make a cool ride. 1959 Bel Air
Back twenty years ago or so we frequented
the NSRA Street Rod Nationals , first in Columbus and later in Louisville. By Louisville we had the 49 pickup on the road and cruised the fairgrounds checking out all the cars. Friends of ours had a 39 Ford 2 door sedan. We cruised in it as well but the view was better from the back of the truck. We still have hours of video on our VHS compact cassettes - if we could play them it would be great. Today's pick took me back there, the 39 Ford sedan is a great body style. and if it was done up as cool as Mario's was, cruising would be awesome. 39 Ford 2 door We all know that I love old Chevy trucks. We have a great driving 64 that Andew drives daily. 63's are cool as well, the biggest differences being the wraparound windshield {or knee knocker as it was nick named }, the dash and the grille. These trucks are easy to build with lots of interchanging parts and are well supported by aftermarket. I would love to build another, maybe on air bags, 327, 4 speed, ...
This one is priced right and looks like a good start [from here]. 1963 Chevrolet pick up Pictures are very important to me when searching for a new project. Description is important too, because the tone can let you know how honest the pictures are. I have always used an ad with pictures in my blog but today will be an exception. This ad caught my imagination:
Entire Garage Contents Model A project, 2 old Honda bikes, truck load of parts, small block , etc... Model A comes with Horton Chassis - quality high end therefore body is probable really nice with all the good stuff; Bikes are probably mint, low kms, ready to ride if you blow off the dust; truck full of parts probably includes vintage speed equipment, 3 deuce manifold, old flathead stuff etc, the guy would probably love for you to take the cool signs on the wall, the workbench, tool box, hardly used paint gun etc... How do you picture the garage and contents? I am afraid to call - my garage is already full and I am sure this would either be a big diasapointment or a deal too good not to buy. For now we will leave it up to my imagination. As I walk through my accumulation of projects I am reminded that the ones I most want to work on are pretty far down the list and pretty big projects once I get to them. So when I look for great deals on the internet I am drawn to cars similar to the ones I already have but are closer to the road. In reality I know that once I had them I would be tempted to build them all the way and ultimately they wouldn't be done any sooner but a man can dream can't he? I already have a solid 49 Buick sedanette and a roadmaster 4 door as well. Nevertheless this 49 Buick Super Sedanette still makes my list and so I share it with you.
Yesterday I blogged about the Rockford Files Firebirds. Because I preferred the back window treatment of the earlier birds I used a 1973 and I have learned that officially they only used 1974 -1978 Firebirds and Formula Firebirds redressed to look like plane Firebirds. Today we follow that up with Republic of Doyle's GTO. Allan Hawco give James Garner credit for the inspiration of his character Jake Doyle.
This would be a great car to drive hard. 1968 GTO |
